Psalm 33:1-12

New International Version

Psalm 33

¹Sing joyfully^(A) to the Lord, you righteous;
    it is fitting^(B) for the upright^(C) to praise him.
²Praise the Lord with the harp;^(D)
    make music to him on the ten-stringed lyre.^(E)
³Sing to him a new song;^(F)
    play skillfully, and shout for joy.^(G)

⁴For the word of the Lord is right^(H) and true;^(I)
he is faithful^(J) in all he does.
⁵The Lord loves righteousness and justice;^(K)
the earth is full of his unfailing love.^(L)

⁶By the word^(M) of the Lord the heavens were made,^(N)
    their starry host^(O) by the breath of his mouth.
⁷He gathers the waters^(P) of the sea into jars^[a];^(Q)
    he puts the deep into storehouses.
⁸Let all the earth fear the Lord;^(R)
    let all the people of the world^(S) revere him.^(T)
⁹For he spoke, and it came to be;
    he commanded,^(U) and it stood firm.

¹⁰The Lord foils^(V) the plans^(W) of the nations;^(X)
he thwarts the purposes of the peoples.
¹¹But the plans of the Lord stand firm^(Y) forever,
the purposes^(Z) of his heart through all generations.

¹²Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,^(AA)
the people he chose^(AB) for his inheritance.^(AC)

¹⁷After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer^(A) and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom^(B) came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).^(C)

¹⁸Then Melchizedek^(D) king of Salem^(E) brought out bread^(F) and wine.^(G) He was priest of God Most High,^(H) ¹⁹and he blessed Abram,^(I) saying,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,^(J)
Creator of heaven and earth.^(K)
²⁰And praise be to God Most High,^(L)
who delivered your enemies into your hand.”

Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.^(M)

²¹The king of Sodom^(N) said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods^(O) for yourself.”

²²But Abram said to the king of Sodom,^(P) “With raised hand^(Q) I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High,^(R) Creator of heaven and earth,^(S) ²³that I will accept nothing belonging to you,^(T) not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ ²⁴I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me—to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre.^(U) Let them have their share.”

Acts 28:1-10

Paul Ashore on Malta

28 Once safely on shore, we^(A) found out that the island^(B) was called Malta. ²The islanders showed us unusual kindness. They built a fire and welcomed us all because it was raining and cold. ³Paul gathered a pile of brushwood and, as he put it on the fire, a viper, driven out by the heat, fastened itself on his hand. ⁴When the islanders saw the snake hanging from his hand,^(C) they said to each other, “This man must be a murderer; for though he escaped from the sea, the goddess Justice has not allowed him to live.”^(D) ⁵But Paul shook the snake off into the fire and suffered no ill effects.^(E) ⁶The people expected him to swell up or suddenly fall dead; but after waiting a long time and seeing nothing unusual happen to him, they changed their minds and said he was a god.^(F)

⁷There was an estate nearby that belonged to Publius, the chief official of the island. He welcomed us to his home and showed us generous hospitality for three days. ⁸His father was sick in bed, suffering from fever and dysentery. Paul went in to see him and, after prayer,^(G) placed his hands on him^(H) and healed him.^(I) ⁹When this had happened, the rest of the sick on the island came and were cured. ¹⁰They honored us^(J) in many ways; and when we were ready to sail, they furnished us with the supplies we needed.
